Age-associated traits

Over the course of the ERC-funded Constructing Age For Young Readers project, and more specifically between February 2019 and May 2021, 242 books in the corpus were digitised and manually annotated to add information on fictional characters and their age. With the help of the University of Antwerp’s Text Mining Centre, data pertaining to fictional age can be extracted from all these texts. This online notebook lets you explore the adjectives, possessions, and verbs associated with fictional characters of different ages in the CAFYR corpus. With the built-in word cloud, the frequency of these terms can be visualised or you can download the extracted words and frequencies in the form of a .csv file, to look at in more detail.

Word cloud generated from the frequency lists of adjectives used to describe child characters in David Almond’s books for child readers.
